Kyrgyzstan is best seen by car. Distances are short, the main roads are decent, and almost everything worth seeing sits well away from the bus routes.

Your national driving licence is valid here — no international permit needed. Bring your passport, your licence and a refundable deposit. Registration takes about ten minutes.
The classic loop: Bishkek → Ala-Archa gorge → Issyk-Kul (Cholpon-Ata, Karakol) → Jeti-Oguz → Son-Kul → back to Bishkek. Roughly 1,200 km, of which about 150 km is the gravel climb to Son-Kul that needs 4×4. Comfortable in seven days with stops.
Main highways are paved and in reasonable shape. Mountain sections are switchbacks with tight turns; in winter there is ice and some passes close after avalanches. Fuel stations are common on main routes but sparse in remote areas — keep the tank full.
For paved routes around Issyk-Kul any sedan will do. For Son-Kul, jailoo pastures and gravel tracks you need genuine four-wheel drive and at least 200 mm of ground clearance — our SsangYong Musso and Subaru Ascent both qualify.
We are reachable 24 hours a day. We can advise on routes, pass conditions and places to stay. If something goes wrong with the car, we sort it out on the spot or replace the vehicle.

Questions
Yes. A passport and a valid national driving licence are enough — no international permit required.
Main roads are in good condition and well signposted. Mountain roads demand care: sharp switchbacks, livestock on the road and ice in winter.
For paved routes, no. For Son-Kul, remote gorges and gravel tracks, yes — take 4×4 with 200 mm clearance or more.
Cross-border trips need separate arrangements and extra vehicle paperwork. Let us know in advance.
